STORYLINE:

Several things to learn about a Rush Show.

First, the fans in the front 15 rows are avid fans and love to talk about their 30+ shows they have attended.
Second, they like to talk about their 30+ Rush shows they have attended during the show.
Third, they don't stop.....

The music and the fans are not distracting but as the show opened, the Bass was so hard it clipped the first song ("Subdivisions") and the intial one minute of "Big Money" until I cranked it way low.
From there the show was really really good. (see samples)
One point during the show ("caravan") two drunk Rush fans went beyond their seats and were trying to argue why they didnt miss their seat.
Entire "background" lasted about 45 seconds but enough to annoy me.

Beside that, I think the quality overall is a better than my Greensboro show. Shame about the first song.
Setlist was wierd for me.
Personally I love the Clockwork Angels CD and didn't mind that they played almost the whole CD.

Anyway, I digress.
Enjoy, and wish me luck at The Who.
Been hit twice with metal wands and been able to BS my way through both.
Not sure third time is a charm.

If anyone has a hint as to how to get equipment in without getting hit by wands (other than stuffing deep- I do that) please help....

Bill

Venue is the brand new Barclays Center which just opened last month, a 19,000 capacity arena which hosts the Brooklyn Nets. I believe Rush is only the third musical act to play there, after the opening concerts (eight) by Jay-Z and two performances earlier this month by Barbra Streisand.

I had a perfect spot for recording audio. Too bad I left my good mics in the car for various reasons however I'm not crying over the recording I made. Sounds much better in my opinion than my Philly which was done from the rafters. Added bonus of very few talkers.

Lineage: Stealth recorded and minimally produced by mrsaureus, sitting on the right in the lowest section off the floor about 30 rows back from the stage. Core-Sound High End Binaurals (DPA-4060 capsules) to Sony PCM-M10 (48 kHZ, 24 bit), WavePad Sound Editor to chop and FLAC only. This is an audience recording that aims to document the experience of being in the crowd at the show, and features occasionally loud but appropriate crowd noise. This is the first time this recording is being shared.

As usual, lots of dates for the latest Rush tour have already been posted, and the set list doesn't vary at all, so you might wonder why it's worth bothering adding yet another date. But I think there is a little bit of the anal completist in all tapers, so ideally it's nice to have every single date represented, and anyway, everybody would most like to have the show they actually went to. So for those of you in NY and NJ, here's the Prudential Center leg. There were some technical problems at the beginning of the show with the audio for the Watchmaker videos, and then a broken drumhead, and some guitar issues, but it didn't matter. To paraphrase what I said about the PNC Bank show two years ago: Rush looked great, they sounded great, the Watchmaker videos were really well produced and funny (Geddy Lee could be a very successful professional comedian), and the stage set and pyrotechnics were delightful and at the base of it all is two and a half hours of sterling, nearly flawless classic progressive rock music. One of the things I like about Rush is that they refuse to become a greatest hits band. In fact, it takes a fair amount of courage to play as few hits as they did in this show, but as far as I'm concerned, all the better. I can hear the hits on the radio. I'd rather be challenged by the show. And Rush is happy to do that.

Reviews:

When it was first announced that Rush would be touring with a string section, many Rush fans were skeptical about incorporating other musicians into a Rush show; something that had never been done before. There were also many questions raised such as how many musicians would be included, would it be the same group for each show, where they would set up on stage, etc. Now that the band has 5 shows under their belts, we know that the string section has remained constant with the same 8 musicians - 2 cellists and 6 violinists (plus the conductor David Campbell) - but there was still very little known about the individual members. When the tourbook was released a couple of weeks ago, we finally learned the names of the musicians as they were listed in the credits.

Clockwork Angels String Ensemble:

David Campbell - Conductor
Joel Derouin - Violin
Gerry Hilera - Violin
Jonathan Dinklage - Violin
Entcho Tudorov - Violin
Mario De Leon - Violin
Audrey Solomon - Violin
Jacob Szekely - Cello
Adele Stein - Cello

Assuming boldness, generosity and relevance are laudable traits, Rush’s current tour alone could make the first-time nominees a shoo-in for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when next year’s inductees are announced.

The trio’s Bell Centre concert on Thursday clocked in at nearly three hours, not counting intermission. With its extensive catalogue, Rush could have filled that time in the same manner as so many of their contemporaries: with hit after singalong after hit, and a token acknowledgement of the new album dropped like a plastic bag at the dog park.

That has never been Rush’s way of operating, but even by the standard of a band that has always confidently presented its most recent songs in concert, Thursday’s show was characterized by a staunch refusal to take the path of no resistance. Clockwork Angels, the group’s 20th studio disc, has been widely embraced, and as the first true concept album by a band that fits somewhat in the progressive-rock mould, its storyline merits more than a speed-read. Still, it would be courageous even for an outfit with a four-album catalogue to play an unbroken hour of new material, as Rush did in the centrepiece of Thursday’s concert.

The post-intermission block of Clockwork Angels could have left the first half of the night clear for a set of standards, but just as Rush maintained a deep focus on its current album, the trio went searching for deep cuts from its history. (At least, from a certain period of its history, with significant attention paid to the mid-1980s.) Subdivisions was a given, and The Big Money may have been familiar enough, but anyone who expected the sinister futuristic drama The Body Electric was hunting for spoilers before showtime.

The concentration of ’80s album tracks didn’t sound dated overall: if the synth shower in Grand Designs was of its time, Alex Lifeson’s taut guitar was timeless. The same held true for the anti-nationalism of Territories, given a modern hook with an animated film whose iconography borrowed from the Anonymous collective.

Geddy Lee’s voice remains nearly as supple as his bass, and while the castrato wails of yore are the stuff of legend, they overshadow the affecting moments when he has descended from the stratosphere. Built around his vulnerable shudder, Bravado offered a blissful comedown between a breathless spin through The Analog Kid and the hard-riffing instrumental Where’s My Thing?, which contained the most fluid of Neil Peart’s three spotlights (in place of his usual behemoth drum solo).

As an eight-member string section took their seats at the back of the stage when the entr’acte ended, it was clear Rush was about to pull out the stops. (And not just with a post-intermission comedy short featuring Lee, Lifeson and Peart as cloudland gnomes, maintaining the most tenuous of connections to the new album’s themes and nudging the band’s film clips even farther into mind-warping surrealism.) While the visual element had been typically vibrant before, the stage came alive in the Clockwork Angels segment: the steampunk machinery chugging through Caravan, the blitz of fireworks in Carnies, the versatile mini-screens that changed formation and acted as extensions of the main backdrop.

What mattered more than that, more than the audacity of the set list, was the strength of these songs. Some ranked as the show’s toughest: The Anarchist featured crimson lighting to match Lifeson’s hellion theme, and with Lee’s sustained cries and a wildfire instrumental section that sounded partly improvised, the triumphant Headlong Flight was as loose as this legendarily polished band has been in decades.

Other new numbers ranked as the show’s most tender: the bittersweetness of The Wreckers was straightforward but stunningly emotional (somewhat at odds with the artful but cold cut-out animation accompanying it), and Lee demonstrated excellent taste in introducing The Garden — centred on a touching and true philosophy of life — as one of the band’s favourites.

It’s hard to drown out a power trio of Rush’s standing, so the strings were present for colour, not bombast. It’s to their credit that they often blended into the songs’ fabric. When they made their presence felt, it mattered, especially in the shimmer of The Garden and, unexpectedly, in the jagged instrumental YYZ, one of a handful of classics that followed the Clockwork Angels songs.

It needs to be noted that many of the 12,400 in the audience reacted more viscerally to the closing evergreens — including The Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer and three segments from the towering 2112 — than to the rest of the show. It also needs to be noted that Rush has never sought easy applause. Instead of skimming the surface of their back catalogue and Clockwork Angels, Lee, Lifeson and Peart took pride in the richness of their past and present. All hall-of-famers should have as much to celebrate.

Schenker rocks.. Fact.. The venue was great, but the sound system in there sucked bad.. I had 7th row, right in front of the stack, brought in my dpa4022's and came out with this? Blechhh.. Sound is less than mediocre at best. But The performance (of Schenker) was excellent. His band? eh.. Singer was below average, band was decent.. Schenker is still the man tough..

Band lineup:
v: David Van Landing
g: Michael Schenker
k,g: Wayne Findlay
b: Elliot Rubinson
d: Pete Holmes

Notes:
Excellent recording made in a small club in front of a suprisngly small crowd of
about 250. Unfortunately, Robin McAuley had to sit out this tour due to illness,
with Van Landing doing a fine job of filing in. Almost no audience interference,
with two minor exceptions. I had to move during "Into The Arena" to avoid some
squawking bimbos. Later, I could not avoid a couple of imbeciles who yapped
throughout "Love To Love."

Manson took the stage at 8:00 pm while I was still in my the parking lot waiting in a long line of cars. Two separate traffic jams caused me to get to the venue late and I missed taping the first 6 songs of Manson sets.

A running conflict between Manson and Zombie over set times spilled over into the performances tonight as both frontmen trash talked the other with Manson saying he was going to kick Zombie's ass after the show and Zombie saying this would be the last show of the tour. For more background, see these two threads on the Manson tour forum from the past two shows including this show...

Recording Notes:

This is a crew ear monitor feed consisting of mainly guitar, drums, and all of the pre-recorded effects used during the show. Unfortunately Manson's vocals are low in the mix
but the nice stereo sound makes up for it a little IMO. I also filmed this show in HD in addition to recording it with microphones. The DVD and mic source will be torrented
eventually so please be patient.

I left the 20 minutes of the security break in for completists' sake.

Taper's Notes:

I have had I don't know how many iem "tapers" fish me for information since I have started posting some of my recordings this past summer. A few of these I feel are good tapers/traders but a vast majority seem to play "dumb" in order to get as much information for their personal gain
without sharing any of their recordings like I do via torrents.

As a taper for over a decade now, I have no interest whatsoever in playing "trader games" such as hoarding or taunting which
is rampant in a lot of the iem taping world. All of the best iem tapers keep quiet. ;-)

As of right now I will stop responding to any PM's regarding iem taping from Dime members until I see them start sharing some of their own recordings. There are a few members which do share their sources and I applaud them for that, but a vast majority of
iem tapers (you know who you are) never share a thing.

That is my challenge to my fellow iem tapers...we shall see how many accept.

Stood next to the board for this one, overlooking a lot of small people so my view was excellent. I loved the lightshow. I kept looking over to the guy playing the lights like a boss. The sound was good too, so I don't have a lot to complain. They even dressed up with corpsepaint and all. If Cristina wasn't there it could have been a black metal band. Enjoy it!

Excellent recording made in a small club in front of a suprisngly small crowd of

with Van Landing doing a fine job of filing in. Almost no audience interference,
with two minor exceptions. I had to move during "Into The Arena" to avoid some
squawking bimbos. Later, I could not avoid a couple of imbeciles who yapped
throughout "Love To Love."

Enjoy it!
